Fenway Center Phase 2 Bridge: A Billion-Dollar, Transit-Oriented Development in Boston

An impressive development known as Fenway Center involves a significant investment of over $1 billion that features a spacious 90,000 square-foot air rights deck constructed above the Massachusetts Turnpike. The massive structure rests on a pile-supported podium that spans the intersection of Beacon Street and Brookline Avenue – marking Boston’s largest air rights edifice since Copley Place opened for business back in 1980.

Environmentally-friendly initiatives drive the entire construction process behind this innovative transit-oriented development; hence it has rightly earned its Gold LEED certification status today. Also worth noting is its strategic location that provides convenient access to public transportation including the Lansdowne Commuter Rail Station, the Kenmore Square and Fenway Green Line Stations. This unique project promises to significantly improve pedestrian connectivity between Longwood Medical Area, Fenway, Kenmore Square, Boston University and Back Bay neighbourhoods.

Despite some significant obstacles that surfaced during the project’s foundation work, investors handled all concerns well and hired J.F. White Contracting Company Inc. of Framingham, MA–a reputable construction firm involved in addressing similar constraints within the region; charged with construction management and general construction services.

J.F. White managed to excel in providing exemplary temporary earth support design service while drilling micropile foundations requiring dynamic pile testing at depths that occasionally exceeded 250 feet below grade; they relied on GTR for technical insights throughout these distinct stages of the project.
